BMW key battery repair Hastings sealed key fix

BMW Key Not Working? It Could Be the Sealed Battery

If your BMW key has stopped working, you’ve probably been told it needs to be replaced.

We hear this a lot.

A number of BMW models use keys with a sealed rechargeable battery inside. Because they’re not designed to be opened, most places won’t attempt to repair them and will just recommend a new key.

In many cases, that’s not necessary.

At Bay Plaza Smart Services in Hastings, we repair these keys regularly. Most of the time, the issue is simply the battery wearing out rather than the whole key failing.

BMW models like the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 and X5 (E46, E90, E60 and similar) commonly use these sealed keys.

As the battery ages, you might notice the key only works up close, works intermittently, or stops working altogether.

Instead of replacing the entire key, we carefully open it, replace the battery, and fit it into a new casing. This keeps your original electronics and avoids the cost of a full replacement and programming.

While the key is open, we can also fix other common issues like worn buttons or damaged switches if needed.

In most cases, this type of repair costs between $89 and $150 depending on the condition of the key.

A full replacement, on the other hand, can cost significantly more and usually involves ordering a new key and getting it programmed.

If your BMW key has gradually stopped working, or the range has reduced over time, there’s a good chance it can be repaired.

If the internal board is badly damaged, replacement may still be needed, but we’ll always check the key first and let you know the best option.

If you’re in Hastings, Napier, or anywhere in Hawke’s Bay, bring your key in and we’ll have a look on the spot. No booking needed.
